Bremen residents remember Otis Bowen
A lot of people took a trip down memory lane Sunday as they remember Otis Bowen.
Many described him as an amazing guy, that would take a seat in the cafe,
always remember your name and when he asked how you were doing,
he actually cared about your answer.
For many, it wasn't the politics that stood out the most,
but the time he spent being "The Doc".
“He got paid off of chickens or anything else the farmers
could give him lots of times.
I remember mom had an awful time getting that dollar scrapped up,
a dollar and a half for house calls. That time you know,
back in the 40's,” says Glenn Kuhnn.
For many it was the hopes of being one of the lucky ones, a Bowen Baby.
“Everybody wanted to be born and have him be the person that did all of the work for you”, says Tammy Venable.
But no matter what memory you may have of Otis Bowen...
“I will never forget the first time I had ever met a governor and you know, a young high school student, it was just like really, what an impressive guy and he just really, put himself out there to make us feel comfortable, answer questions that we had and just really made us feel important” says Mark Neidig, “he would just, his smile. He was just always smiling, always had a grin, always had that laughter that kind of followed the smile”.
It’s that name, and that face, that will never be forgotten.
A funeral service for Bowen will be held Friday at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Bremen at 11.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8th and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 9th at Saint Paul's.

Making the Grade = A
Bremen schools make the grade, again
BREMEN – For the second year in a row, both Bremen High School
and Bremen Elementary-Middle School have earned a grade of “A”
from the Indiana Department of Education.
Beginning with the 2010-11 academic year, the State Board of
Education changed the labels for school categories based on
student performance from the terms Exemplary, Commendable,
Academic Progress, Academic Watch and Academic Probation
to easy-to-understand letter grades (A, B, C, D and F).
The new A-F labels improve transparency by allowing parents
and community members to better recognize how well Indiana
schools are performing and leading students to achieve
positive academic outcomes.
Indiana’s new A-F model holds schools and corporations
to higher standards and provides a more accurate picture of
their performance by incorporating student academic growth and
graduation rates, as well as college and career readiness,
as measures of success.
Bremen High School Principal Bruce Jennings attributes the
school’s 3.85 score (out of 4.0 possible) to the greater school
community.
“Kudos to all of the hard-working people in our school family,
including our staff, students and parents,” Jennings said.
Bremen Elementary-Middle School Principal Larry Yelaska said his staff
should get credit for the school’s perfect 4.0 grade.
“I am proud to say that the biggest factor leading to our success is our
incredible and dedicated staff. This rating is a direct reflection of the hard work,
quality instruction, and dedication that our staff members invest each day
to benefit our students.”
Both schools earned a letter “A” grade for both the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years.
